ABOUT ANAESTHETICS

General Procedure for all Anaesthetics

You will always be seen preoperatively. This is usually done in the hospital on the ward or even within the operating theatre suite depending on your admission time to hospital and the timing of the surgical list. At this time you will be asked y a number of questions so that the state of your general health may be established and an appropriate anaesthetic plan can be formulated for you.

If you have special medical needs the surgeon may refer you for consultation prior to the day of surgery to give us an opportunity to ensure that your medical conditions are optimally treated before surgery.

The questions you will be asked will include the following major categories;
Medical conditions
Serious illnesses
Medications
Previous anaesthetics
Family history
Allergies
Smoking
Alcohol consumption

An anaesthetic plan will be outlined with you as will any specific potential risks to you.

I will be delighted to answer any questions for you.
